Founded in 1885 with just over 20 members, the Christchurch Liedertafel male
voice choir has grown steadily over the years. Our current membership stands
at 52, a vibrant, diverse group of people drawn together by a common love of
male voice choral music who, in addition to singing for pure enjoyment and
camaraderie, perform three subscribers concerts each year.
We also sing at a wide range of community events and perform with other
artists and choirs. These have included recent concerts with the touring
Metropolitan Male Voice Choir of South Australia and the Geelong Welsh
Quartet, octet, duet and solo performances by Liedertafel members feature in
most subscriber and public concerts.
Current events include
classical and light opera, sacred music, British art, favourites from
Europe, haunting spirituals and universally loved songs from popular shows.
Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 7.00pm to 9.00pm in the Opawa
Baptist Church Hall, Wilsons Road, Opawa, Christchurch.
There is a short break for a cuppa (50 cents) and socialising followed by an
auction of produce provided by the green-fingered members of the choir.
The annual subscription for members is $50. The first year is free and a member who introduces a new member also receives a free subscription.
The singing season generally starts on the first Monday of February and concludes with the November subscription concert.
The AGM and election of officers is held in late February.
We generally have two social occasions during the year for members and their partners - a winter luncheon and a Christmas function. These are informal events with moments of musical mayhem.
